KOBIAN-RII

Japanese robot manufacturer Tmsuk, together with Waseda University, developed a humanoid robot called the Kobian robot. Not only it can walk and talk, but also realistically express seven human emotions.

Together with its body movements, the Kobian robot can express facial movements. It can express delight, surprise, dislike, sadness and smirks. Additionally, it can walk around, perceive things happening in its surroundings and respond to them appropriately.

With small motors and servos installed in its head, the Kobian can move its lips, eyes and neck when it responds to outside stimuli. The Kobian is also programmed to do different tasks and functions.

The team developing this robot hopes to continue its research and development and wants it to be in the healthcare and homecare sector. The Kitakyushu based manufacturer, together with Graduate School of Advance Science and Engineering of Waseda University, hopes that someday the Kobian would help patients suffering from limited mobility.

According to its developer, Kobian’s ability to display several emotions is vital, as this would allow them to interact better with humans they are helping.
