Aiko Chichira

TOKYO, Japan – Aiko Chihira, a humanoid robot dressed in a kimono, smiles and greets shoppers at the entrance of Tokyo’s Mitsukoshi department store, as reported by Reuters.

Chihira was developed by Toshiba last year. The robot made its debut at the store on Monday, wherein she was assigned a new role to interact with customers.

The robot, who speaks Japanese, has human-like features and capable to blink. She can also be programmed to speak in other languages including Chinese.

Hitoshi Tokuda, Toshiba’s new business development division group manager said, “It would be good if we can have her provide guidance, or recommend various things in Chinese.”

“People can be looking around and think, ‘Oh if Aiko is around, she can speak Chinese’. That’s what I hope will happen,” Tokuda added.

Toshiba said that Chihira have 43 motors allowing her to move almost human-like. She is also programmed to do Japanese sign language in order to communicate with hearing impaired customers.
